The 1970's also witnessed the return of rimless glasses. The "frames" were twice as large as they had been in the fifties. High index lenses were not invented yet and as a result, substantial minus lenses were much thicker at the edges than ever before. My ex-wife and I bought this type of glasses in 1978 and her lenses (around minus seven) were almost half an inch thick at the sides. She liked the big frames of that time but this was the first time I heard her in doubt whether this was over the top or still acceptable!
