"Big and chunky.... the bigger the better" was how Sohaila described her taste for frames, so these striking Christian Dior glasses made the journey to Ireland with her in mind. Needless to say, I was delighted when Sohaila selected them. These massive glasses were featured in half a dozen previous photo shoots but the effect was often that of "glasses on a model" instead of "a model in glasses". This portrait says it all.
Sohaila would have made a marvelous model for Dior in 1976 but at the time her age was minus twelve so it did not materialize. Anyway, there is always a second chance.... Sometime during the 1980's I came across these red Dior glasses at the (in)famous flea market "Waterlooplein" in my native Amsterdam and bought them without bargaining. Three guilders was a lot of money in those days but after seeing these marvelous Sohaila portraits I now consider the investment "good value for money".
