Marieke 026

Glasses: nameless, late 1940's / early 1950's
[L: +1.00 / R: +1.75]

My fascination for glasses started with my grandmother
who allowed me to look through all her glasses when I was
five. She never bought bifocals - vanity! - so she kept
switching between a rimless pair and for long distance (not
unlike the pair shown here by Marieke) and various cat eye
glasses for reading including a lovely pink frame. My granny
died when I was ten. I was too shy to ask my parents if I could
get her glasses as a keepsake. The request would probably
have been dismissed as nonsense anyway.... But childhood
memories can be quite strong. I clearly remember what I saw
through her glasses and my estimation is that her prescriprion
was L=R -1.00 for long distance and L=R +1.50 or 2.00 for
close work.
